Outdoor Fireplace and Fire Pit Design From Start to Finish

Transforming your landscape into a functional outdoor living space is an exciting endeavor. There are so many possibilities and elements to choose from. An outdoor fireplace or fire pit is a great way to upgrade your outdoor space and make it more functional and intimate. There are lots of things to consider when designing your outdoor fireplace and fire pit so we’ve broken them down for you.

Location

You most likely already know exactly where you want to put your structure but in case you’re having trouble deciding, there are a few things to keep in mind. You want to place your fireplace to block prevailing winds if possible and you’ll want to place your fire pit where another structure or plant is blocking the wind. This could mean planting taller hedges or shrubs or installing a fence, or even just placing the fireplace or fire pit closer to your home so the structure of your house blocks the wind.

It’s also important to consider the convenience of the location of your fire. Do you want it far out in your yard away from your home or in your enclosed patio? Do you want it close to or far away from other outdoor amenities like a pool, grill island or putting green?

Wood or Gas? That Is the Question

You’ll also want to decide if you want a wood or gas burning fire. If you choose wood, it’s important to note you’ll need to have a decent supply of kindling and firewood through the season. Gas burning fires can be more convenient, but are typically more expensive. You’ll also want to make sure you’re aware of your local laws and regulations about open fires.

The Perfect Aesthetic

Now it’s time for the fun part: design! Choosing the material for your fireplace or fire pit’s structure should depend largely on the style of your home and if you want them to complement one another. Brick, stone, stucco and concrete are the most popular fireplace materials. Brick, stone and concrete are popular for fire pits. You’ll also want to consider the intended use of your fireplace. If you think you want to use your fireplace to cook, you’ll want to design a larger firebox. The construction of the fireplace or fire pit itself shouldn’t take more than a few days.
