Protect Your Investment: Why Watering New Landscaping Matters

New landscaping is an investment in the beauty, value, and enjoyment of your property. Whether you have recently added trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, or seasonal plantings, proper watering plays one of the biggest roles in helping those plants establish and thrive.

Even professionally installed plant material needs consistent moisture after installation. New plants are adjusting to their environment, developing roots, and relying on the right watering routine to stay healthy.

At Seiler’s Landscaping, we want every landscape to look great not only on installation day, but for seasons to come. That starts with proper watering.

Why New Plantings Need Extra Attention

All plants need adequate moisture, but newly installed plantings are especially vulnerable. Their root systems are still becoming established, which means they need consistent care during the first several weeks after planting.

Without enough water, plants can become stressed, wilt, decline, or fail to establish properly. With the right watering routine, your landscape has a much stronger chance of staying healthy and growing successfully.

The key is to water slowly and deeply so moisture reaches the root ball and surrounding soil.

Watering Shade and Evergreen Trees

Trees require a generous amount of water after planting because their root balls are larger and need time to settle into the surrounding soil.

For the first 10 to 15 days after planting, provide slow-running water every other day. A hose placed at the base of the trunk allows water to soak in gradually and reach the roots more effectively.

After that initial period, continue checking the soil around each tree every day or so. If the soil crumbles, it is time to water again. Allow the tree to absorb moisture before watering again so the soil does not become oversaturated.

Watering Flowering Shrubs

Flowering shrubs usually benefit from a lighter, more frequent watering approach.

Water each shrub individually with a slow-running hose at the base of the plant. The goal is to saturate the root ball and the surrounding soil so the plant has enough moisture to establish.

For the first few weeks after planting, watering every other day is typically recommended. Throughout the growing season, continue watering every 4 to 5 days depending on rainfall and weather conditions.

Watering Evergreen Shrubs

Evergreen shrubs should also be watered individually as needed.

Check the soil around each shrub every day or so. If the soil crumbles, the plant needs water. Use a slow-running hose at the base of the shrub to saturate the root ball and surrounding soil.

As with trees, it is important to allow evergreen shrubs to absorb moisture before watering again. This helps prevent both underwatering and overwatering.

Watering Perennials and Grasses

Perennials and grasses also need consistent watering after installation.

For the first three weeks after planting, water grasses and perennials every other day. These plants should be watered individually with a slow-running hose so moisture reaches the root area.

Although they may require less water than larger trees or shrubs, they still need regular attention while they are becoming established.

Important Watering Reminders

A few simple habits can make a big difference in protecting your new landscaping:

  • Be consistent, especially during the first few weeks after planting.

  • Water slowly so moisture reaches the roots instead of running off the surface.

  • Check the soil often, especially during hot or dry weather.

  • If you are going out of town, ask someone to water for you.

  • Remember that new landscaping is vulnerable and needs extra care.

  • Plants cannot absorb water when the ground is frozen, so thorough watering before freezing conditions is important.
